CONGRESSMAN DAVIS SIDES WITH CRITICS OF FAILED IMMIGRATION BILL

U.S. Representative Artur Davis (D-Ala.) issued the following statement today concerning the Senate's efforts to pass comprehensive immigration reform package:

"The senate immigration bill deserved to fail. It was an unwieldy collection of inconsistent goals, and as a result both progressives and conservatives found fault with it.

"A sound immigration bill would have the following characteristics:

I. The process would be more consistent and more straightforward for legal immigrants who are attempting to join our country in a lawful manner.

II. Rather than lumping 12 million illegal immigrants in one category, the law should prefer individuals who have built families, roots in the community, and who are working productively.

III. Sanctions should be strengthened against employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

IV. And finally, our immigration laws should avoid the disruption of family units, and should treat the reunification of families as a desirable value."
